Date Published: 20/06/2011

A teenager in China has sold one of his kidneys in order to buy an iPad 2, Chinese media report. The 17-year-old, identified only as Little Zheng, told a local TV station he had arranged the sale of the kidney over the internet. The story only came to light after the teenager's mother became suspicious. The case highlights China's black market in organ trafficking. A scarcity of organ donors has led to a flourishing trade. Deep red scar It all started when the high school student saw an online advert offering money to organ donors. Illegal agents organised a trip to the hospital and paid him $3,392 (£2,077) after the operation. With the cash the student bought an iPad 2, as well as a laptop. When his mother noticed the computers and the deep red scar on his body, which was ca... Read More

Kidney failure victim thanks her hero dads on Father's Day

Date Published: 19/06/2011

KAREN PHAIR has two dads to thank this Father's Day - and they have both saved her life. She was just 17 when her kidneys stopped working only weeks after an operation to have her tonsils out. Determined to give his daughter the life she deserved, Karen's dad Joe stepped up and donated a kidney. That amazing gift of life bought Karen precious time and the joy of the birth of her son Kyle, now three. Desperate to help, her stepdad Paul Edwards, 43, gave a kidney. Today Karen will celebrate her first Father's Day since that operation. She said: "I wouldn't be here without both of my dads. Son gives dad kidney for Father's Day

Date Published: 19/06/2011

A Sussex, N.B., father received an extraordinary gift from his son just in time for Father's Day — a new kidney. Arthur Cruickshank, 67, has diabetes and has been undergoing dialysis treatment for years. He lost one of his kidneys three years ago and had seen a rapid decline in his health. His 39-year-old son Dana decided it was time to offer one of his own kidneys to his father. "The dialysis was keeping him alive, but he didn't have any quality of life and he was dying. There's no doubt about it, he eventually would if he didn't get a kidney," Dana said. His mother said she was taken aback by her son's decision. "He was literally dying in front of us and finally [Dana] had enough of that," said Doris Cruickshank. "Dana just said to me one day. 'Well, I guess Dad needs a kidne... Read More

Diet 'can reverse kidney failure' in mice with diabetes

Date Published: 19/06/2011

A controlled diet high in fat and low in carbohydrate can repair kidney damage in diabetic mice, according to US scientists. The study, published in journal PLoS ONE, showed a "ketogenic diet" could reverse damage caused to tubes in the kidneys by too much sugar in the blood. In the UK around a third of the 2.8m people with either type 1 or 2 diabetes go on to develop kidney damage. Diabetes UK said it was "questionable" whether humans could sustain the diet. Damage reversed The researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York used mice with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Once kidney damage had developed, half the mice were put onto the ketogenic diet for eight weeks. The highly controlled diet, which is 87% fat, mimics the effect of starvation and should not be used ... Read More

Gwynedd dialysis patients use Skype to cut travel time

Date Published: 15/06/2011

Mr Blake has home dialysis five times a week and can speak to the hospital via his laptop if he has any problems Patients in Gwynedd are using Skype to connect by computer to the local renal unit while having dialysis treatment. Eleven patients are saving on round trips of up to two hours to see nursing staff for checks by communicating by video over the internet. Other areas of the UK may follow suit after a British Renal Symposium showcase. Specialist nurses say it is a low cost way to speed up problem-solving and increases patient confidence. Haemodialysis specialist nurse Sarah Hirst-Williams said delegates at the symposium had been "blown away" by the simple idea of using Skype, usually used for socialising. She said it was first thought of by a patient who was a two-hour drive ... Read More

Vytorin Lowers Heart Disease Risk in Kidney Patients

Date Published: 10/06/2011

Vytorin, a drug used for lowering cholesterol levels, has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease among kidney patients by up to 25 percent, according to the results obtained by Oxford University research scientists who carried out the research on a group of 9,270 kidney disease patients, with the work starting in 2003. The measured improvement was 17% but many patients were not on the drug for the entire test period, and the researchers estimate that the improvement would have been 25% if they had.Patients with chronic kidney disease are at high risk of suffering a heart attack. Lowering the LDL levels (the so-called bad cholesterol) reduces the risks for healthy people, but this latest study shows it works very well for chronic kidney disease patients too, reports Dr. Colin Baigen... Man finds kidney donor through Facebook

Date Published: 23/04/2011

NASHVILLE (WSMV) - Facebook brings people together for social interaction, but recently the site brought two men together for a live-saving mission. Tim Magsby was in desperate need of a kidney, but those closest to him were ruled out as donors. After four years on dialysis, he almost lost hope, but decided to take a chance on Facebook, posting a video, pleading for a kidney. Months went by with no response, until one night he got a call from an old high school classmate in California who he hadn't spoken to in 25 years. "I've learned in life, that there's the good voices that tell you to do stuff and then there's the bad voices. That had to be a good voice," said Randy Riney, who went to Magsby's school in 1986. Riney had seen the video on a mutual friend's page and wanted to donat... Read More
