A Ticket to Ryde

In the first of a series of interviews broadcasted by Renal Radio, David takes a trip over to St Mary’s Dialysis Unit on the Isle of Wight. Kindly invited by Siobhan Gladding, Modern Matron of Wessex Renal & Transplant Services, (Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth).

At the beginning of this light-hearted and informative interview, on a warm day in July David sets off from Portsmouth for the approximate 45 minute ferry ride across to Ryde – the gateway to the Island where he meets with the staff and patients at the dialysis unit.

For many, taking a holiday whilst on dialysis can seem rather daunting, however as we soon discover from Steve and John, two regular visitors to the Island, dialysis can be fitted around a very happy and enjoyable family holiday.

There is plenty to do for holidaymakers on the Island from sporting activities such as golf, sailing, orienteering to history & culture or you may prefer to explore the Island on foot or horseback. There is something for everyone from spending a day in the countryside or on one of the many beautiful beaches.

Arriving at the dialysis unit David is met by Siobhan, who had already started her day with a 6am ferry trip to Ryde. Nicky, the Sister on duty shows David around the unit.  After meeting Anna, the dialysis assistant David is introduced to Steve and John who share some of their experiences and opinions as well as their favourite places to visit whilst staying on the Island.

We trust you will enjoy the interview.  If you wish to contact us with your comments, suggestions or any ideas for future interviews, please email info@renalradio.com or sign the guest-book, which can be found at www.renalradio.com/guestbook.

If you would like to book holiday dialysis in any of Portsmouth NHS Trusts holiday units please speak to your holiday co-ordinator, Renal nurse or contact Siobhan Gladding on 02392 286000 ext. 1075.
