Dialysis , the ability to artificially replace the functions of the kidney, is one of the remarkable advances of science, engineering and medicine. Thomas Graham, a Scottish chemist, first coined the term dialysis' in 1861, but it was nearly 100 years before his ideas were applied to man. In war torn Holland in 1944 the first patients received dialysis using a makeshift machine built from sausage casing, wooden drums and washing machine parts. Those early patients had acute kidney failure, often caused by crush or other combat injuries, a condition from which the kidneys can recover if the person can be kept alive during the critical period.
